ILCN Webinar: Avoiding Past Mistakes- Contextualizing Target 3 Implementation in the Global Biodiversity Framework for Africa’s Protected and Conserved Areas Expansion

September 26, 2023
8am ET | 1pm BST | 2pm GMT | 3pm EAT

Africa is home to at least a quarter of the world’s biodiversity, but much of it lies outside formal Protected Areas (PAs). In a continent where over 60 percent of the rural population relies on diverse ecosystem services for food, water, health, and economic livelihood, area-based conservation is a critical issue.

Join the ILCN and the African CSOs Biodiversity Alliance for this September webinar as we delve into questions about reshaping the narrative of African land protection to leverage Protected and Conserved Areas (PCAs) as a tool for uplifting communities. We will focus on gender-sensitive rights-based approaches, as they apply to Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework; funding modalities for PCAs, especially Other Effective Conservation Mechanisms (OECMs); and local-level money flows.

ILCN Regional Representative for Africa, Kiragu Mwangi will moderate a diverse panel of conservation experts to shed light on possible financing mechanisms for PAs and OECMs, policies for empowering transboundary connectivity and regional cooperation, and strategies for prioritizing the needs of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.
