By putting music first, Riebl uses song to highlight issues of climate change, land justice, and Indigenous rights

"There's a great Australian tradition of activism in songs," said singer, songwriter, and composer Felix Riebl, whose music touches on themes of climate change, land justice, and Indigenous rights. Riebl is the singer and co-founder of the band Cat Empire and collaborates to lead the Indigenous youth choir Spinifex Gum, which has been celebrated for its powerful address of topics including social disparities in The Pilbara, Aboriginal deaths in custody, disproportionate incarceration rates in Australia, and land rights. Still, Riebl said activism is secondary when he is creating and leading the creation of music. "The intent of any musician, has to be about the music first and foremost, before any politics or activism or [social statements] come out of it."

Indigenous cultures have stewarded nature for thousands of years but many of today's conservation landscapes sideline this knowledge. Join Cecilia Riebl, ILCN regional representative for Australia, in a discussion showcasing examples of Traditional Owners informing and leading private land conservation in Australia and Canada. The event will also explore opportunities to mainstream these approaches into conservation easements.

Webinar: Civic and community land conservation in Asia and its role in achieving 30x30 goal
 
In Asia, conservationists are defining best practices for reaching the nation's 30x30 goals, set by the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15. ILCN Regional Representative for Asia, Shenmin Liu, will be joined by experts from across the nation to explore these tactics and discuss the role of civic and community land conservation in reaching 30x30.
